Has Print Media Fallen Behind for Good?

Though the death of print media was declared in late 2006 it actually made a bit of a comeback in 2010. Next it became well known that the Internet is the place that consumers increasingly spend their media time. Today we know that people are actually spending more time on their mobile phones than they are spending interacting with print media.

According to eMarketer, time spent on mobile devices is now an average of 65 minutes a day, compared to 44 minutes a day for magazines and newspapers.  Although both were tied last year, mobile actually grew by 30%.

Are media dollars spent online surpassing those spent on print?

Mashable.com recently proclaimed they would for the first time in 2012. What does this mean for REALTORS®?

The return-on-investment of real estate ads in newspapers and other print media have been second-guessed for quite some time, as multiple studies have shown that the majority of homeowners begin their search online. You can see this trend illustrated in eMarketer’s chart below:

Why exactly does online surpass print media?  Today’s consumer is accustomed to the instant gratification of the Internet – information is free and mobile. Now, even those who enjoy newspapers and periodicals can read them on their tablets. But what about real estate? Consumers still seem to be attached to local newspapers.

Of course, knowing your local market is very important, but keeping up with national trends is as well. Agents should take a good look at the tools and new strategies available to them and reevaluate. The same old formula no longer works in this market.

That being said, we believe some print media remains very effective in real estate. The most successful advertising programs we have found offer a customized solution including print, online, and eFlyers in a competitively priced package.

5 Reasons Newspapers Aren’t Dead

This is the digital age. Print is dead. Newspapers are long gone. Get with the program.

We disagree.

Sure, we specialize in websites, effective social media campaigns and eMedia. But that doesn’t mean we’ve abandoned our roots – it’s not that black and white. There are lots of reasons to balance traditional and new media in your marketing plan; here are 5 reasons you shouldn’t necessarily cut newspapers from your budget:

Content isn’t always free. The popular consensus is that you shouldn’t have to buy a paper when you can read everything online. Here’s what you don’t realize – many online newspaper sites give you a teaser excerpt to an article and then make you pay a subscription to read the rest.

If a newspaper’s website isn’t mobile-friendly, forget it. Many people today access email and websites through their Smartphone. If you think it’s hard to scroll down 10 pages to read an article from a monitor, try reading top news from your blackberry or iPhone. Do you have the patience?

You can still read a newspaper in more places than you can your laptop. Think about how many places you can tuck a newspaper and tote it along for convenient reading. ‘Nuff said.

Reading the Sunday paper over coffee isn’t the same digitally. It’s Sunday morning. There’s a fresh pot of coffee brewing and you decide to enjoy the Fall weather on your back porch. Do you bring your laptop and log on to your favorite newspaper’s website? That doesn’t exactly paint the serene scene you first envisioned.

Digital coupons haven’t quite caught up. We know there are some of you out there that still like to spread out the pages of coupons from the paper and clip away. There are some establishments that are now accepting mobile coupons, but it’s going to be a while before it is widely accepted and stores and restaurants have the capability to go 100% digital like that.

Do you think newspapers are obsolete? Do you still read them?

Do We Still Need Traditional Media?

Many Social Media “experts” have predicted the downfall and demise of traditional media. Yes, we strongly encourage our clients to include Social Media in their marketing strategy, but we rarely tell them to drop traditional media altogether.

The balance is truly necessary for both branding and reaching your target market. In fact, a Social Media campaign, if not backed by a solid marketing plan, will not be very effective.

It’s true that many newspapers and magazines have disappeared, and that more people use social networks first to get the news. Blogs have taken off in popularity and reach.

But there are still benefits to the tried and true:

Traditional media is instantly recognized. It has stood the test of time, and offers more credibility than a local blogger. This results in instant status for your message.

You can reach a larger audience. You may have 2,000 Twitter followers, but you can still reach vast percentages with magazines, billboards, radio, and television.

Social media is often about traditional media topics. To take that a step further, appearing in traditional media offers a boost in your own blog and social networks!

Still thinking about ditching your print media budget and hiring your nephew to Tweet for you? Think again! Idea Associates can you help you create the perfect marketing mix that gets results!
